The Friday Shuffle

Five random songs from my iPod.

1. Redemption Day - Sheryl Crow, Sheryl Crow
Come leaders, come you men of great. Let us hear you pontificate. Your many virtues laid to waste and we aren't listening. What do you have for us today? Throw us a bone but save the plate. Oh, why we waited til so late. Was there no oil to excavate, no riches in trade for the fate of every person who died in hate. Throw us a bone, you men of great.

2. If I Didn't Love You - Squeeze, Singles: 45s and Under
If I didn't love you, I'd hate you. I'm playing your stereogram. Singles remind me of kisses. Albums remind me of plans. Tonight it's love by the fire. The wind plays over the coals. Passionate looks are my fancy, but you turn the look into stone.

3. Nothing But a Good Ride - Lyle Lovett, My Baby Don't Tolerate
He's pulling out for Reno. He hopes a tire don't blow. Up near Albuquerque he'll fuel and get some coffee. Cline's Corners truck stop. A waitress with a wet mop telling him to don't walk. He tips his hat and don't talk.

4. Chickamauga - Uncle Tupelo, Anodyne
Appalachia, so patient. The lessons we've traveled. As soon as we're out, we're kickin' our way back in. Fightin' fire with unlit matches from our respective trenches. No authority can clean up this mess we're in. A miracle might point the way to solutions we're after and avert our chronic impending disaster. Chickamauga's where I've been. Solitude is where I'm bound. I don't ever wanna taste these tears again.

5. Gone for Good (Alternate Version) -- The Shins, So Says I (EP)
You want to jump and dance, but you sat on your hands and lost your only chance. Go back to your hometown. Get your feet on the ground and stop floating around. I find a fatal flaw in the logic of love and go out of my head. You love a sinking stone that'll never elope. So get used to used to the lonesome. Girl, you must atone some. Don't leave me no phone number there.

The Friday Shuffle...is alive.

1 .Fred Meyers - Glen Phillips, Abulum
One hand must wash the other. Each man must be a brother. Band up and take cover. We'll go dancing, set fires, tag buildings and slash tires, drive go-carts like Shriners or just hang out at Fred Meyers. We'll go out babe, skateboarding, go looting, food hoarding. whatever you desire or we could just stay in my bed at Fred Meyers.

2. You Don't Love Me - Matthew Sweet, Girlfriend (Deluxe Edition)
What a beautiful moment. The truth comes out at last. Once your heart would own me forever then this passed. And what a beautiful moment as my head comes apart. Drunk and in a manner of saying, wasted. But you don't love me. You don't love me. You can't see how I matter in this world. Even though I loved you, you can't believe that. If you think that leaving is what will make you happy then I guess its okay. I think its okay if you go away.

3. For You - Bruce Springsteen, The Essential Bruce Springsteen (Disc 1)
You were not quite half so proud when I found you broken on the beach. Remember how I poured salt on your tongue and hung just out of reach. And the band they played the homecoming theme as I caressed your cheek. The ragged, jagged melody she still clings to me like a leach. But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way. We were both hitchhikers, but you had your ear tuned to the roar of some metal-tempered engine on an alien, distant shore so you left to find a better reason than the one we were living for. And its not that nursery mouth I came back for. It's not the way you're stretched out on the floor`cause I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors and who am I to ask you to lick my sores? And you should know that's true. I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency. And your cloud line urges me, oh, and my electric surges free.

4. Philosophy - Ben Folds, iTunes version
I see that there is evil and I know that there is good and the in-betweens I've never understood. So won't you look at me, I'm crazy, but I get the job done. Yeah, I'm crazy, but I get the job done.

5. Numb as a Statue - Warren Zevon, The Wind
I'm numb as a statue. I may have to beg, borrow or steal some feelings from you so I can have some feelings too. I'm pale as a ghost. You know what I love about you. That's what I need the most. I'm gonna beg, borrow or steal some feelings from you. I'm gonna beg, borrow or steal so I can have some feelings too. I don't care if it's superficial. You don't have to dig down deep. Just bring enough for the ritual. Get here before I fall asleep. Ain't nothing special when the present meets the past. I've always taken care of business. I've paid my first and last.
